Our Story

Frog Lake First Nations' (FLFNs) Legacy Energy and Alternative Power (LEAP) initiative started in 2021 to build resilience and capacity in sustainable industries. Our team has been recognised as leaders in innovation and reconciliation through green partnerships.

Our work expands our early successes in oil and gas into new energy sectors in order to better sustain FLFNs' members in a world with diversifying energy sources and needs.

Sustainable Success Partners

LEAP has developed partnerships with industry, post-secondary education, public, private, and the non-profit sectors.

Partners support our work through co-creation of plans, research, capacity development, finance, project implementation, and connection to networks.

Expertise For Results

LEAP partners understand that success is not just about profitability; it's also about sustaining our lands and our Nation for future generations. Frog Lake and partners connect traditional land-based approaches to new approaches to energy generation and storage, new materials and uses, and new ways to develop and grow capacity.

Our Team

Our dedicated team is here to guide you through every step of your journey towards sustainable success. Together, we will create a strategy that aligns your business goals with a greener and more prosperous future.

Our Recent Work

The LEAP team has undertaken the following work to advance our goals of strengthening our nation and energy sovereignty.

01

Hemp-based Building Materials and Textiles

FLFNs is partnering with the Town of Elk Point in Alberta to establish a hemp-based building materials and textiles factory. This collaboration is a major step to activate land designated for industrial development and will build local skills around cogenerated heat and electricity. We will also demonstrate ways to embed carbon into durable materials: hemp bricks for constructing housing at FLFNs, and textiles for creating uniforms. Hemp is sourced directly from FLFNs growers. The factory will provide employment opportunities for Indigenous workers and receive partial funding from the Government of Alberta, emphasizing the collaborative effort and support from various stakeholders in promoting sustainable and community-driven development.

Project phase: Development

02

Desalination and Hydrogen Production

Working with our partners at Siphiko Energy, we are transforming former oil wells into sources of sustainable energy. We extract and desalinate brine from these wells as feedstock for a hydrolysis process to produce green hydrogen. We are proud to partner with the University of Calgary and SAIT, who bring expertise in research and development to this project.

Project phase: Trials

Project duration: 24 months

03

Teaching and Traditional Foods Greenhouse

FLFNs has built a teaching and traditional foods greenhouse next to the TTES high school to enhance access to sustainably grown foods and nurturing skills in value-added agriculture. Supported by the Local Food Infrastructure Fund, this greenhouse provides students and nation members with hands-on learning about traditional plants and modern growing techniques, connecting them to our heritage while preparing them for future careers. By growing and processing food on-site, students and community members gain valuable skills in sustainable agriculture, from cultivation to production, and produces food for vulnerable nation members. This project strengthens our food security, promotes self-reliance, and reinforces our commitment to sustainable practices that honor both traditional knowledge and contemporary agricultural innovation.

Project phase: Phase 1 Commissioning

04

Towards Net Zero Homes

Our Nation is creating a database of locally sourced materials and resilient designs for net-zero homes. These homes are crafted to withstand fire, flooding, and mold, ensuring durability and ease of maintenance. This resource supports sustainable housing solutions tailored to our environment, enhancing safety, sustainability, and community self-reliance. This partnership with SAIT, Reimagine Architects, and Williams Engineering Canada brings skills and new opportunities for FLFNs contractors and suppliers to work in the green construction industry.

Project phase: Implementation

05

Solar PV and Wind Installer Training

FLFNs is partnering with QUEST Canada and Saskatchewan Polytechnic to equip community members with skills in installing and maintaining solar and wind energy systems. This program offers hands-on training that empowers participants with in-demand technical knowledge, opening pathways to jobs in the growing green energy sector. By building local expertise, FLFNs is investing in sustainable energy solutions that directly benefit the community, reduce reliance on external resources, and create economic opportunities. This initiative aligns with FLFNs’ commitment to environmental stewardship, fostering a future where clean, renewable energy systems are managed and maintained by the community for long-term resilience.

Electric Vehicle Charging Station

FLFNs installed a Level 3 electric vehicle (EV) charging station at the Frog Lake Travel Center, marking a significant step in our clean energy journey. Funded by the Indigenous Clean Energy Charge Up program, this charger offers fast, efficient charging for travelers and community members alike on the Highway 897 corridor connecting Cold Lake and Lloydminster. This project is a major achievement for our clean energy team, dedicated to advancing sustainable infrastructure on our lands. The EV station not only supports eco-friendly transportation but also aligns with our commitment to environmental stewardship and innovation, making clean energy accessible and reinforcing our Nation’s role in a sustainable future.

09

Green Public Transportation

We will create a public transportation system to connect Frog Lake First Nations members through a service of buses, vans, and future services, which bring nation members where they want to go while reducing our nation’s environmental impacts.

Our nation members can access reliable transportation within FLFNs and to members living in nearby cities and communities for daily needs; employment; health, education and social services; and people important to their lives.
